On November 6, 2024, students from Gumatdang Integrated School (GIS) became champions of sustainability during the Solid Waste Awareness Campaign by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Council, in collaboration with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), led by Mr. Jones Bauzon and Mr. Jason B. Banisoc.
This event was part of a wider initiative to inspire the next generation to embrace sustainability and take action for a cleaner planet.
Throughout the day, students participated in hands-on activities and thought-provoking discussions focused on environmental challenges caused by waste. MENRO representatives led the charge, urging the youth to recognize their potential to create lasting change in their communities by adopting responsible waste disposal and recycling practices. Their message was clear: true sustainability starts with each of us making informed, conscious decisions.
The event also featured a powerful collaboration with nursing students from Pines City Colleges, who joined as guests in delivering a seminar on health-related thoughts while highlighting effective waste management practices.
One of the most impactful moments of the day came from GIS Science Teacher I, Ms. Freya C. Caccam, who shared a surprising takeaway from the seminar. She emphasized that proper hygiene, especially when dealing with waste, is critical to safeguarding our health and the environment.
By actively engaging in the campaign, GIS students not only acquired vital knowledge about waste management but also emerged as passionate environmental advocates, ready to inspire others and take action toward a cleaner, greener future.
